Getachew (Roei) Asnakew arrived in Israel from Ethiopia in his early teens. Tragically,
His mother and father both died shortly thereafter, leaving Roei to fend for himself along with two older sisters and four younger brothers.
Roei carried the burden of a deep sense of loss and isolation. At Yemin Orde, he found love, comfort and support and he began to thrive. Roei joined the Yemin Orde Children’s Choir and his natural friendliness and positive attitude made him a leader among his peers.
Roei attended a pre-military academic program at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, which is a highly challenging and selective university. Today, he is studying mechanical engineering at the Technion and then will join the IDF as an officer in his field of expertise.
Roei studies 12 hours a day, leaving very little outside time for a job. He receives financial assistance from Yemin Orde’s graduate scholarship program to help support him during his four years at the Technion.
Roei’s determination and clear career path is the result of the careful guidance and the solid education he received at Yemin Orde. He has plans to “pay it forward” and help others in the same way that Yemin Orde has supported and helped him during his struggling teenage years.
“Yemin Orde is a place that’s very special to me. Every person in the Village wants to help me and see me get as far as possible. The place has become a part of me,” said Roei
